Bobby E. Lee and Bob Wells had hoped to open a program to keep disadvantaged youth out of trouble and enable them to make the passage to productive adult citizenship. In January 1974, with the Lawrence Jaycees, their dream became a reality as the Boys Club of Lawrence was chartered into membership and first opened its doors.
In 1987, the Boys Club of Lawrence became the first in Kansas to allow girls to become members. The Boys Club of Lawrence officially became the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence.
In 1999, a second Club opened, the Boys & Girls Club of Cordley, located at Cordley Elementary school. In 2000 the Boys & Girls Club opened another 6 satellite Clubs also located within Elementary schools (Kennedy, New York, Woodlawn, Pinckney, Deerfield, and Langston Hughes).
