Rex served as Douglas County Sheriff across four decades, from mid- 1960s to the 1990s. The early 1970's were a particularly turbulent time for Lawrence and Douglas County.
Johnson was lauded for working cooperatively with other law enforcement agencies. He worked very closely with Chief of Police Dick Stanwix.
He was originally hired as a deputy then moved up to Sheriff.
In 1993 he was the recipient of the Buford M. Watson Jr. Public Service Award. He was a mentor to the youth of Lawrence.
After his retirement as Sheriff, he served as bus manager for USD 497 and as security manager for Hamm's.
