Olin grew up in Lawrence and spent his life in Douglas County.
He was an Army procurement officer in World War II.
He graduated from Kansas University Law School. He entered law practice with C.C. Stewart in 1935 and later founded the law firm now called Petefish, Immel & Heeb. He was a member of Douglas County, Kansas and American Bar Assns.
Mr. Petefish was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, deacon and trustee; former member of Kansas School of Religion's executive committee; former trustee, KU Center for Research Inc.; former chairman KU Endowment Association board of trustees, where he also was past chairman of its Finance Committee; former chairman, Lawrence Federal Savings board of directors; advisory director of Columbia Savings Assn.; Lawrence National Bank and Trust Co. director; former vice-president, chairman of executive committee and director of Kansas Public Service Co.; former director and secretary of INTERx Research Corp. Inc.; former trustee, United Presbyterian Foundation of Kansas; member, Presbyterian Manor of Lawrence Advisory Committee; incorporator and former chairman of executive committee of Cottonwood Inc.; and former president, Lawrence Kiwanis Club.
He also was a former member of I00th KU Anniversary Council for Progress committee; a life member of KU Alumni Association and Chancellor's Club, KU; past president, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, Douglas County Bar Assn., Kansas School Attorneys Assn., KU Memorial Union Corp., Board of Governors, KU Law Society; a former member of the boards of KU Adams Alumni Center, Oread Laboratories, Inc.; and an advisory director of First National Bank, Lawrence.
Mr. Petefish also received numerous honors and awards including KU's Distinguished Service Award; Fred Ellsworth Award for Unique and Significant Service to KU; Olin K. Petefish Research Award in Basic Sciences; KU's Higher Education Leadership Award; Lawrence Chamber of Commerce 1996 Citizen of the Year Award; and Lawrence Kiwanis Club 1997 Substantial Citizens Award.
