Ms. Stapleton was a member of the first class to graduate from Lawrence's Liberty Memorial High School in 1924. She received her undergraduate degree from KU in 1928; her master's degree in 1934 and her doctorate in education in 1954, both from Columbia University.
She taught physical education at a Kansas City junior college from 1929 to 1931, and then worked for the Kansas City public school system from 1931 to 1939. She taught at KU from 1939 until her retirement in 1972. She served as chair of the Women's Division, Department of Physical Education, for 18 years at KU.
Ms. Stapleton was a member of First Baptist Church, Presbyterian Manor, Delta Kappa Gamma, Soroptimist Club, and American Association of University Women.
She was president of Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1954, vice president of the Central District, American Association for College Women in 1958, vice president of the Central District, American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1955.
